Community Service to Cheshire Home

On 5 Dec 2009, a team of students led by Mr Low Hock Siew spent their Saturday morning at the Cheshire Home while many others could be still sleeping or lazing around. They helped in tidying and cleaning up the place which many would not even laid their hands on. Their heartwarming actions truely relfects the "hearts-on" in them.

PROJECT GAPc - 21st & 22nd Nov 2009

PROJECT GAPc(Giving Away Personal Computers) @ SOUTH WEST organised by the South West Community Development Council (CDC), in partnership with ITE College West and supported by Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), Lee Foundation and Touch Community Services was successfully carried out on Sat, 21st Nov to Sun, 22nd Nov 09 at ITE CW (Bukit Batok Campus).

A total of 13 staff and 31 students from EC-DR and EC-BB volunteered in helping to make the 8th run of Project GAPc a success.

CCK Road Show



The CCK Roadshow 2009 was successfully carried out at BR Campus on 14 &15 Oct 09 reaching out to 39 network schools. An event of this nature would not have been possible without the great teamwork demonstrated by all the staff and students from active participation in project display, performances on stage, entrepreuneur skills at work, to taking lead in briefing and ushering potential students.

Our EC team comprises of Poh Kheng Guan, Allan Tan, William Tan, Harold, Chun Kee and their students showcased their projects at the road show.

Greenwave Competition 2009 updates... 2 of our teams from EC DR were shortlisted for the final assessment on 20 Oct 2009. The 2 projects were "Conservation of Fiddler Crab" by Poh Kheng Guan and "SMS Alert Gardening Kit" by Sudheer.

Learning Working By Lucas Nuelle

On 22 Sep 09, a one day learning workshop was conducted by Dr Laufer from Lucas Nuelle. The objective was to allow College West training staffs to have some practical experiences on their UNITRAIN platform. 5 modules were on displayed and they were modem methods, TCP/IP, sequential circuits, microcontroller PIC16, sequential circuits as well as basic of antennas. A total of 19 training staffs from EC CW attended the workshop. The workshop was coordinated by Ho Ban Chye.

Window and Product's Display Competition






ITE Dover Coop Shop won the competition in "Window and Product's Display". The student helpers from the ITE Coop won $50 worth of vouchers. The well deserved reward were the efforts from students who maintained a high standards of service and commitment to the Coop Shop operations.
The Dover campus coop shop was lead by Mr Low Hock Siew and staffs from each department. Apart from the winning the Coop have seen an increase of sales and profits under the charge of Mr Low.

Visit by VP of Visonic, Mr Avishay

The VP and Director of Visonic flew in from Israel to pay us a visit. Visonic is one of our main sponsor for intrusion and detection systems, where they have generously given their PowerMax system for the training of our students. The guest were received by our DyD Lee Mui Lan.

2 of our ex-student are back with us on internship, Ce Yu and Josephine. They will be back in Dover for internship from 2 Sep to 10 Oct 2009 and 7 Sep to 18 Oct 2009 respectively.

Both of them are doing their diploma currently, Ce Yu is doing Electronics in Ngee Ann Poly while Josephine is doing Electrical and Electronics Engineering in Singapore Poly.

Both are helping William in his PROGs project.

Army Open House 2009

This year, the army open house was held at Pasir Laba Camp from 3 - 7 Sep 2009. All our final year students were encouraged to attend the event. EC CW activated a total of 7 classes for the Open House for the visit on 3rd Sep 09. All the classes were accompanied by their Class Advisors.

PROJECT GIVING AWAY PERSONAL COMPUTERS (GAPc) @ SOUTH WEST

PROJECT GAPc(Giving Away Personal Computers) @ SOUTH WEST organised by the South West Community Development Council (CDC), in partnership with ITE College West and supported by Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), Lee Foundation and Touch Community Services was successfully carried out on Sat, 15th Aug to Sun, 16th Aug 09 at ITE CW (Bukit Batok Campus).

A total of 16 staff and 42 students from EC-DR, EC-BB and former EC-BB students volunteered in helping to make the 7th run of Project GAPc a success. The team from EC-DR were Nancy Quek, Pei Sze Chong, Low Hock Siew, Ong Chao Xiang, Ho Thiam Chwee, Shekih Fawazi and Goh Yeow Koon.

Industrial Visit to Tyco Fire, Security & Services

An industrial visit to Tyco Fire, Security & Services Pte Ltd was organised on 20 July 2009. A team of EC staff from Dover and Bukit Batok went for the visit to see their state of the art integrated security system and equipment. The visit was made possible for the close partnership and the strong support by Tyco toward Technical Education.

19th Singapore Inter-School Micromouse Contest 2009

Our department sent a team of students to participate in the 19th Singapore Inter-School Micromouse Contest 2009 organised by Ngee Ann Poly in the JC/ITE category. The event was held at Ngee Ann Poly on the 7 - 9 July 2009.

Our students did us proud in clinching the 2nd runners up.

Microsoft Embedded Standard Training


As part of the drive for building staff capability and to engage staff during the July vacation, a training on Microsoft Embedded Standard was organised for the whole of EC CW. The training was conducted from 1st to 3rd July 2009. Staff were taught about embedded OS, image porting and embedded hardwares.

Advanced CPA Workshop by Ng Chun Kee

A workshop was conducted by Ng Chun Kee on CPA, a specialisation module for HNitec EC, during the June vacation. The workshop is on the training board, which was specially designed by Chun Kee, to train our student in computer periperals and hardware interfacing. The workshop was conducted on 25 - 26 Jun 09.

A visit was organised to SII, Security Industry Institute, at Singapore Post Centre, Paya Lebar on 23 Jun 09. where the team explore opportunities for collaboration between the 2 organisation. Singapore International Water Festival

The inaugural Singapore International Water Festival is a two-day event jointly organised by Singapore Polytechnic and the Public Utilities Board. It was held at the Marina Barrage for the first time on 20 and 21 June 2009. The GOH for the event was Dr Teo Hoe Pin.

The traditional Singapore Poly's River Raft competition was one of the highlights for the event, where student use their creativity to design a raft. Our department submitted one entry for the competition, headed by Mr Low Hock Siew.

Completion of Consultancy Project for SP Services

Our EC team provided consultancy services to design and enhance the micro-controller system for the “Tariff Calculator Exhibit” at Electricity Efficiency Centre of the Singapore Power. This exhibit is to demonstrate the costs for various types of household.

The original exhibit could only display the costs of electrical consumption for a fixed tariff rate. It could not be re-programmed for a new tariff charge. Our team redesigned the micro-controller system and the interfaces to allow the administrator to change the tariff. The project was led by Ng Chun Kee.

iDelite Training by Darin Cheong

A sharing session and training session was conducted by our ex-Nitec EC graduate, Darin Cheong on 22 May 2009. Darin was championing our department drive for iDelite videos. To date he has help us produced over 20 videos with his short stay with us.

During the sharing session, he taught the staff how to create and edit videos. He has even provided a step by step guide for the staff. He was clear and concised in his teaching and he has a natural flair for teaching.

VB for MS Excel Course for Stuart Wright Pte Ltd

A customised short course on VB for Excel was conducted for Stuart Wright Pte Ltd. A total of 9 participants from the company attended the workshop dated 6 - 9 Apr 2009.

The trainer is Allan Tan, a lecturer from EC DR, he has vast experiences in VB for Excel and has conducted numerous runs of the course. He is capable of providing consultancy in the area of VB programming in Excel.

LPKF Protomat Training by Hakko

The 2 days training on 25 - 26 Mar 2009 was conducted by Ken Teo from Hakko. This is part of the TSC drive to train and upgrade of our staff. During the workshop, staff were taught how to use the Protomat machine; this will be especially useful in doing projects.

Staff Industrial Attachment to Tyco Fire and Security

Tyco Fire and Security has been very forthcoming in giving their support to ITE. On top of taking in our students for internship, our staffs are also given the opportunity to be exposed to the security industry. This was the 2nd batch of staff attachment to Tycom. The 3 weeks attachment was very fruitful where staff have the chance to visit different setup and even sensitive installations. The experience gained will definitely benefit our students as staff can better relate thses real life examples and case studies into the curriculum.

A visit was oraganised to Kenda Technologies on 12 Mar 2009. The visit was to explore opportunities for collaboration, one of which is to market our "product" (our staff-student project) for commercialisation. The project on "Water Monitoring System", led by Ong Siok Bie, was presented to their team.

LKY Technology Award 2009

Our EC team won TWO Awards! Which is the first in the EC history. Well done!!

The 2 projects are:
1. "Mini Intelligent Terminal for Child & Elderly" led by William Tan
A futuristic mobile terminal suitable for child and elderly, which will encourage excercises, track diet and at the same time provide fun. It also has a fall detection feature incooperated.

2. "EzPower" led by Ng Chun Kee
A energy conservation project, targeted at providing a new way to control usage of power supply.

ITE-IBM Assistive Technology Award 2009

ITE-IBM Assistive Technology Award 2009 - Our EC team won the Most Original Award. The team won $500 on top of the certificate of achievement. The team was led by William Tan. The project was selected for entry to participate in iCreate 2009 student design challenge in Apr 09.

APEC 23rd Annual Micromouse Contest

The APEC (Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition) 23rd Annual Micromouse Contest, 2009 was held at the Marriot Wardman Park Hotel in Washington DC, United States on 16th Feb 2009. This year, there were participants from Singapore, Taiwan, India and US.

Our students from the Electronics Department (CW/DR), Lim Yong Siang and Leong Yew Kwong represented ITE to participate in the event. Yong Siang won the 1st runners-up and defended the Best Student Award, which was won last year.
